Kielder Blog

Life can become a whirlwind at times and some of you might be like me, you work full time, you've got your hands full with kids and housework you almost forget to stop and take yourself out of the bubble for just a moment and go and do something outside of your routine.

Well this trip to Kielder shattered the monotomy of your typical Sunday (at least through the eyes of an adult, probably a kid's worst nightmare). No mobile phone signal, no social media, no distractions (apart from my trusty camera of course), a real chance to become immersed in breathtaking surroundings and capture precious moments of my beloved family.

If you've ever visited Kielder, you know about its winding paths, small streams, and intriguing trails that make you wonder, "Where does that lead?" Unfortunately, with a wife and kids, you don't quite have the freedom to venture off into the wilderness without hearing faint echoes of "Dad, where are you going? Come back!"

However, during parts of my trip to Kielder, I was able to either get ahead or lag behind to capture the beauty of my surroundings. The low afternoon sun created some amazing opportunities for the shots I'm sharing with you here.

I really enjoyed the photo where the sun was shining through a dense tangle of branches. If you look closely, you can also see a hint of a stream flowing through, and I liked the subtle lens glare in the image.

Capturing moments with children is always special.

Sophie particularly enjoyed being in the spotlight, and I was able to capture a beautiful candid shot of her throwing her hair back as she prepared for me to take the photo. Interestingly, this candid shot turned out to be more striking than the one I had originally planned to capture. That's photography for you!

Jack, being his age, was less cooperative in front of the camera, but that didn't stop me from trying to capture his precious moments as well. Sophie and Jack have both inherited my wife's 'glass eye balls' as i call them - bright blue and shiny as glass! You can see them come through in Jack's photo.

As we made our way back to the car, the sun contined to lower in the sky, creating new opportunities for capturing picturesque shots of the woodland with sunlight piercing through. It was my wife who noticed this particular shot below and suggested that I take it. I must admit, I had completely overlooked it, being distracted and looking in the opposite direction.

If you haven't been to Kielder and you live nearby or are visiting Northumberland, it's definitely worth a visit to reconnect with nature or escape from the world for a while. While there is a fair amount of evergreen, which may not be ideal for seasonal photography, there are still hints of the changing season.

We only encountered a few other people walking while we were there, making it a remote and peaceful destination.

If you are going to visit don't forget to take your camera!
